Graphic design with a laptop and other accessories

The design of your company logo and printed material that is handed out to potential clients is your chance to present the kind of image that is in keeping with your firm’s aims. Hiring a professional team to create the right impression is well worth the expense unless you have experienced graphic designers in-house. It is something that needs to be done right first time. When reviewing possible designs many people use computers but in a large conference room either a projector or an HD TV with a large screen makes it easier for everyone to see. The higher resolution that these televisions are capable of displaying means that a crisper, clearer picture is produced, ideal for such tasks. Your PC will need the right connection to do this. Another area where design skills are useful is in creating an effective website. It can be better to use the same team for all design work so that a consistent look is achieved. Widescreen televisions with high resolutions display a consistently good picture and the newer models from leading manufacturers of LCD TV sets have contrast and brightness controls that automatically adjust to the lighting conditions of the room that they are in. Sound can be automatically adjusted as well to smooth out any changes in volume between programmes and different stations. Watching the advertisements on commercial channels can be useful for inspiration when designing your own promotional campaigns even if they are on a much smaller scale, using less resources.

Keeping accurate records

When working with an outside design company it is important to keep records of all work submitted and a notebook is useful for bringing along to meetings so that you can swap files and update documents and spreadsheets detailing agreed timetables for delivery of designs and instructions given to the team. There is a wide choice of mobile computers nowadays ranging from very small tablet PCs to large screen, high performance models that can tackle pretty much anything that is thrown at them. Some brands allow people to choose a specific processor or video card as well, which offers a more flexible approach, giving the buyer more control. A DVD recorder is handy for burning copies of advertisements or other material of interest that you see on the television so it can be shared with the rest of the people at design meetings and discussed. A corporate logo should not be too complicated or involve the use of too many colours generally speaking. It needs to be clear and pleasing to the eye. People who find that they often have to travel to meetings and spend a lot of time on trains may find that purchasing a lightweight netbook is a good idea as it allows them to work on projects whilst on the move, taking up a minimum of space. Combined with a GPRS-enabled phone it should be possible to connect to the internet virtually anywhere in the UK, as long as you can get a mobile phone signal.

Hammering out the details

When shopping for new home entertainment equipment it is useful to have a good idea of the specifications and features that you are looking for in a new model before hitting the shops. There are a variety of formats that a high definition TV may use and whether the fastest refresh rate and best resolution is needed will depend on each individuals’ requirements. Cost is an important factor as well of course, as it is with any design work that you have carried out by an outside firm. The scope of the work that is commissioned should be clearly defined before any contracts are signed so that both parties are in agreement as to what is being paid for. A quick read of reviews on the internet will help when choosing a multimedia laptop. Comprehensive ones will list all the features and often run benchmark tests to evaluate the performance of particular models when carrying out certain tasks. Graphic designers will need models that have plenty of memory installed and up-to-date video cards that are capable of rendering large image files in high resolutions. A large, quality screen is also needed on which to display these pictures. What the resulting designs will be seen on is something to take into consideration as well. Those viewing an advertisement on a new LCD television for example are going to see a sharper image than people who have older sets. With printed material you can of course control all aspects of the medium.

Small concerns

Sometimes hiring a specialist design company can be beyond the budget of a very small company and the work has to be taken on by existing members of staff. In these cases some brainstorming sessions can help on the creative front and having the right equipment to hand can assist in the execution of competent, good-looking designs. Travelling with a digital camcorder at all times allows people to capture any scenery and objects seen along the way that they think may help with ideas. Models being made at the present time are much lighter and smaller than old VHS units and are capable of shooting high resolution video. Stills can be taken from the video footage and manipulated with software on a PC. The cameras have plenty of memory on which to store several hours of filming but if more than this is needed then taking a decent laptop along on your travels is recommended as the footage can be easily transferred to its hard disk. It can then be worked on in situ if necessary, before bringing back the resulting images for your colleagues to see. Training yourself to be more observant of everything around you can help to get your creative juices flowing when tacking design work. Larger companies will more often than not use an outside firm but for a small business that is just starting out, it is possible to come up with some reasonable designs as long as you have access to the right equipment.
